Also use cash! I budget the cash I need for the month so I withdraw that amount. I can't spend more that the cash I have. I've been doing it lately, easier for me to control my expenses. I use a card maybe one a month now, but these are planned expenses too.
To save money I always bring my own drinks and lunch from home. I also ride my bike to work and not eating meat actually saves a lot of money. I also compost my veggie/ fruit waste which is good the environment and good for my wallet, because less garbage bags bought. I also don’t ever buy clothes unless I have too, and then I try to always buy second hand.
I've been being more cautious about money for the past two years I'd say. Because my income decreased. No more weekly Starbucks and the next on the list is combini. I tend to buy a drink and a snack at the convenient store when I work but it's easily 300yens each time now (prices have already raised up but salary no .). Monthly it's a lot of money. I could use that on savings.
