Do you make bento box lunch every day?Do you simply put together leftovers or do you make it from scratch? How long does it take to put it together? What's your favorite bento box side dish?
I was doing it a lot more last year, but this year has been a challenge. I don't work in an office a lot of the time, having meetings outside and visiting other locations around the prefecture. It is very hard when you are very mobile, not only because it is something more to carry around but it is actually quite risky during the hot and humid months.
When I do make a bento, it's nearly always leftovers from the previous dinner. I plan my dinner with the next day in mind. My two favorite things to take as bento are tonkatsu sandwiches and okonomiyaki. Both taste great the next day. I want to do it some times during the cooler months, but I've been out and about a lot these past few months. I might be able to make a bento this Friday, though. :-)
When I used to commute over an hour to work, I gave up on bento box making because of the risk of spoilage.Okonomiyaki as bento is a new one for me. I used to make it for weekend lunches all the time but I'll give it a whirl for bento. What kind of container do you pack it in? What do you do about sauce?
I just pack it in my standard Japanese lunchbox. It fits very snugly, so it doesn't move around and get messy.
I put sauce on before packing it, but there are sauce and mayo packs—even at Daiso. But since it fits snugly in my lunchbox-albeit folded in half-I just add the sauce before packing it.
Team leftovers 🙌 sometimes I'll prepare a salad too, just cutting some lettuce and tomatoes for example. Rice is from home or already cooked rice from the supermarket (Satou no gohan). My husband too prepares his bento: fresh rice and fried food from the supermarket.
Oh this is a good topic! I do usually do a mix of leftovers from the night before and then also making rice for go with a store bought microwavable curry or frozen meal or something instant. Of course I add sides, like nuts or fruit or yogurt that I put in small containers. I don’t think I have the patience to make a beautiful looking bento boxes like these Japanese parents do.

I'm still doing my best to make bento for weekday lunches. Here's my latest blog about healthful bento box making and a few suggested sides. https://www.city-cost.com/blogs/TonetoEdo/wj4q4-food_health
