One of my favorite holidays in Japan is Greenery Day (May 4), closely followed by Marine Day (3rd Monday in July) and Mountain Day (August 11). I'm an outdoorsman, so these holidays mean something to me. Greenery Day, though, was moved from April 29 to May 4 in 1989. Until then, May 4 was celebrated as the Emperor Showa's birthday. However, with the Heisei change, Greenery Day was moved to keep the official contiguous Golden Week holidays (May3-5), and April 29 became Showa Day. May 1 is observed as a holiday by labor unions, but officially May 1-2 are not holidays.
Yes I am happy Golden week is so long this year. It’s lucky!

Here's the post about prefectural holidays, too. Note that not all prefectures have these and dates are all over the calendar. https://www.comfort-japan.com/community/community-life/prefectural-holiday-events-and-deals/dl-b0e86443-b088-47a3-9711-a46d6220c7e8?postId=63802d86a113f20012efea4a&searchTerm=prefectural
